It’s already August 6th, which means I’m already 6 days behind in making this years Halloween costumes! Yes, I know its early, but I need A LOT of time to make our costumes. Having a full time job, plus being a full time mom, I’ve got to squeeze in every little chance I get to make them. Plus it just dawned on me that I will be making one extra costume this year and from here on out, Christian’s. 💙 That’s a whole lotta costume making from someone who is an amateur at best. During the whole process I make lots and lots of mistakes, change my mind a few times and sometimes I even end up completely changing the entire costume one week before Halloween and making a whole new one! Talk about being STRESSED!
I’ve decided I wanted to make a 4 – part series of all the costumes we’ve had throughout the years. Some are better than others, but each is special because so far we’ve managed to stick to tradition, and Lord knows, I love me some good ol’ fashion family tradition.
This time around Emma has been very adamant on what she wants to be for Halloween. She kept shooting down all of my other ideas of what we could be and because I’ve chosen the theme for the last four years, I decided I was going to let her be what she wants this time around. I know Christian won’t mind right now but I hope Jimmy will play along and be who I want him to be in Emma’s theme this year. Can’t wait to get started on them soon!
It’s been our tradition that Emma and I always wear matching costumes. It sort of happened by accident on her first Halloween. She was only 7 months old then and I hadn’t yet thought to make her a homemade costume. She was only a baby and I didn’t think I could even make her one that little. Anyway, we ended up finding this really cute Native American costume at a local costume store and at the same time I found a Native American costume for myself. Jimmy ended up renting some cowboy gear and became a cowboy, which then created our theme for Halloween 2012: Cowboys and Indians.
HOLD ON! Let me explain this picture. Emma is not wearing her Native American costume. She was only 7 months old, and here we were at Disneyland for the event Mickeys Halloween Party at night where it gets pretty cold in October. I was a first time mom, and I was overly protective of her being too cold, so we found her this cute Teddy Bear costume to wear for this night only. Below is a picture of us on Halloween with our “matching costumes” more or less.
I just realized we didn’t get any pictures as a family this time. Well, anyway, you can see Jimmy’s cowboy costume in the first picture, so yes… it did happen 😉
And with that, our tradition started. For the next four years that followed, I have made Emmas, mine and occasionally Jimmys Halloween costume with the help of my wonderful Mom whom first showed me how to sew. Fun fact: she would always encourage me to sew things and when I was a kid, I would make purses out of old clothes such as jeans and other materials. They were actually pretty cool; I wish I still had them. I also would alter my jeans and a few of my friends’ jeans and made them into “skinny” jeans back in high school. That was the thing back in 2004.
Anyway, stay tuned for my next post, where I’ll share Emma’s first homemade costume, which was by far my most stressful one to date!
